This is a beautiful pair of cast and engraved, brass, Deccan Deepalakshmis from Maharashtra. Each lamp bearer holds a leaf-shaped oil well or wick pan. Their hair is pulled back and falls down their backs in long plaits. Both have engraved headpieces, earrings, bangles and necklaces. A Gujarati or Rajasthani style of dress is also possibly engraved, though on one the back has worn smooth with use. Deepa means ‘light’ and Lakshmi is the Goddess of wealth, fortune, love, beauty, joy and prosperity.
